A nationwide mandate would also solve the problem of inconsistency across states. Currently, the United States operates under a patchwork of election laws. Some states require photo identification, others accept non-photo documents, and some require no identification at all. This uneven system creates confusion for voters, especially those who move or vote in different states over their lifetime. It also opens the door to claims of unfairness, where citizens in one state face stricter requirements than those in another.
