Cunningham’s Broadway credits resemble a timeline of American theater. He participated in 15 Broadway productions, either originating or playing significant roles in legendary shows such as Company, Cabaret, Zorba, 1776, Titanic, The Sisters Rosensweig, and Six Degrees of Separation.

He famously originated the character of Flan Kittredge in Six Degrees of Separation (1990–1992) before reprising the role in the 1993 film version. (Donald Sutherland played the character in the movie.)
